So, here I have sat over the last 2 weeks re-reading all of Kenyon's books, including anthologies, in order according to her site. I am so confused. I am currently on Acheron, The dating in that book is so strange in part one. Not because of how she had to date things because of the era but because her dating itself is inconsistent. She jumps from August of one year, then backwards to June of the same year. I don't know if it was a typo on her part, or how things happened.
It is so strange and I just can't wrap my mind around it. I don't know what is going on. Also, there are inconsistencies between Acheron and Styxx. Events that are exactly the same happen six months apart. This happens before the time shift that is mentioned, so I don't know if she just didn't realize the mistake between the times of writing the two different books. Some events match, but others don't.
The main one that I found was August 23, 9529 BC in Acheron; and January 18, 9529 BC in Styxx.
Then Oct. 23 9528 BC in Acheron, Ryssa talks about how she didn't tell anyone about him trying to kill himself, that Styxx passed out and they found him. However, we learn later that it wasn't really Styxx, it was a minion of Apollo. So, how did they know because of Styxx, the impostor woulndn't have felt anything when Ash tried to die.
Overall, the series is wonderful, however, I wish some of the things were explained a little more and that the dates matched better. I will keep reading these books because no matter how many times I have read the books I always find new things.
Like the fact that in Acheron it says that Tory's grandfather Theo was 7 when Ash brought him to America during WWII. However, in Dream- Hunter and The Dark Hunter Companion it states that Theo was 9 when Ash saved him in WWII.
Would have posted this sooner, but I had some double-checking and cross-referencing to do beforehand.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious ... are the dates in question in Acheron's book coming from an actual printed book? The reason I ask, is because I have the Kindle version of Acheron's and Styxx's books (which is a good thing, because otherwise the pages would probably be a huge yellow mess from highlighting, lol). I also know that it was posted on SK's official site that there was a huge typo in the dates when the book went to press; the dates were correct in the proofs, but when the book was printed, the dates were jumbled. (Probably gremlins, lol)
So this is what I found when looking up the dates in my copies of the books:
In Acheron's book (Kindle version), I didn't find any entry marked August 23, 9529. In fact, the entries go from June 23, 9529 (two entries, one in which Ryssa goes looking for Acheron at the stew, and then the other in which she finds him imprisoned in a palace holding cell; she starts leaving him food) to October 22, 9529 which is when Styxx collapses and Acheron is finally released from the holding cell. However, there is an entry for January 18, 9529, in which Ryssa has just found out that she's to be made Apollo's mistress. This corresponds with the date January 18, 9529 in Styxx's book (Kindle version), in which Ryssa is complaining to her father about becoming Apollo's mistress. Both entries also detail how Styxx and Xerxes come across a group of statesmen who are talking about Acheron and how much he looks like Styxx.
So at least in the Kindle version, the two events correspond.
Looking at the date October 23, 9528 (when Acheron is accused of rape and gelded, and subsequently slits his wrists), and then the subsequent date October 25, 9528 (when Ryssa goes to talk to Acheron), I can see where one would assume that "Styxx" had passed out when Acheron slipped into unconsciousness. In fact, it's very likely (though we'll never know for sure) that Xerxes had gone looking for "Styxx", found him passed out, and assumed that it was because of Acheron--since this happened after the starvation incident--when in reality, the imposter was probably passed out for a different reason (my guess would be drunkenness).
Where there other events that didn't seem to match up? I can double-check them against my copies, and see what I come up with. =)
